The most frequent problem asked amongst business process re-engineering (BPR) practitioners is usually: ``What strategy do you follow? '', or perhaps, ``What unit do you work with? '' BPR consultants happen to be characterised and differentiate themselves by the methodology they apply. Although there are numerous successful techniques and methodologies, many renowned BPR experts, including Davenport (1993), argue that process creativity remains more ``art than science''. Furthermore, many creators argue that BPR is a relatively recent discipline and area of exploration and, as a result, the knowledge of the subject is usually not enough to enable methodologies to be identified and developed precisely (Simsion, 1994). Anytime both BPR practitioners and theorists take part in BPR function within a provided business sector, therefore , they may have concentrated on principles instead of on prescription.
The need for a great assessed technique is crucial, nevertheless , not only as a result of commercial pressures from BPR and i . t (IT) consultants, but also for the evolution from the field on its own. Potential customers need a methodology while an important requirements in picking the consultant. Consequently, several types of methodologies and models possess begun to emerge in response to elevating commercial challenges.
This daily news presents the huge benefits and disadvantages of using a methodology in the framework of BPR. It also provides a critique of existing BPR methodologies which in turn served as a basis pertaining to the development of the CONDOR BPR methodology. The paper as well presents the primary points of the implementation of this methodology to three European building companies.
What can a methodology offer for the BPR discipline?
According to Preece and Peppard (1996), a methodology is simply theory put into practice aiming at coping with real world circumstances. According to Valiris and Glykas (1999) a BPR methodology ought to provide ``a consistent pair of techniques and guidelines which will enable the business enterprise process redesigner to reorganise business activities and operations in an organisation''. The use of a technique is essential for a number of reasons. Initially, a methodology supplies a means of codifying experience, knowledge and suggestions, in a contact form that not only can be conveniently applied, although also can become evaluated and tested. Second, a methodology provides a certain standard of organisation, and facilitates preparing and monitoring. In BPR initiatives, a methodology enables the organisation, on the one hand, to have a very clear picture of its current processes with their associated complications and, one the other side of the coin, to design the new state of these processes. In addition , by following a certain methodology, BPR ``re-engineers'' find monitor and evaluate the progress of the re-engineering effort.
Third, a methodology allows those who are included or troubled by the BPR to understand their tasks and clarify their roles. A BPR methodology which is precise and told those who...
